Google Maps is widely used for its clean, bright interface. However, the blinding backlit app makes it difficult for drivers to adjust their eyes when driving at night.
Quickly shifting from a bright light to a pitch black distance can actually cause temporary vision loss. Ananya Bhattacharya of CNN Tech tells us about Google’s solution to the problem: night mode. The Google Maps most recent update finally gives iOS users access to this feature, though Android’s operating system has supported the setting for years.
Google has always had the upper hand over Apple in mobile navigation, despite Apple having the night mode feature first. Google Maps continues to dominate the navigation market, while Apple attempts to catch up by adding new features such as transit options and a “Nearby” button that displays proximate businesses and landmarks.
However, Google still has stronger location data. Another recent update enables users to see when a local business is crowded in order to avoid busy times.
