In his TED Talk, Tony Fadell explains that the first secret of design is noticing the little things in everyday life.
Habits are formed when we become used to the everyday things we do. Whether it’s peeling off the sticker on a ripe plum or putting the fitted sheet on the bed, these things have all become habits for most of us. In his TED Talk video, Tony Fadell, Nest Labs Founder, Product Creator, and originator of the Apple iPod, discusses how designers, product managers and inventors become successful by noticing small details of everyday life and developing a solution to make life easier for consumers.
Tony recalls his time at Apple and explains how Steve Jobs pushed his team to ‘stay beginners.’ In other words, he wanted the design team to stay alert to all of the small details in life. Small details help designers create a seamless transition for customers. For example, customer do not like to wait to charge a new electronic device. So, when you open a new Apple product, it’s charged and ready to use.
